As we close out the year, we’re celebrating students whose courage and determination are opening doors to college and beyond. For those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree, the path to higher education is rarely straightforward.

For Bianca Cadet, a first-generation student from the Bahamas, navigating an unfamiliar education system was overwhelming and confusing until she connected with ScholarMatch.

By drawing on the support of over 500 knowledgeable and caring volunteers, ScholarMatch can connect students with mentors who provide individualized attention every step of the way.

“I can say a lot of things about ScholarMatch, but by far my biggest highlight was how detailed my college coach, Vicky, was with me. As a first-generation student and an immigrant from the Bahamas, I did not know where to start,” she recalls.

Personalized mentorship continues to be a defining feature of ScholarMatch. Time and again, ScholarMatch students cite their mentors' support as a life-changing factor during college application season. Having a mentor in their corner who has been through this process and understands the intricacies of the US higher education landscape can make the experience more manageable and even debt-free.

The Guidance That Made College Possible

“College coaching through ScholarMatch has been instrumental in my journey to higher education. With my coach’s support, I was able to find the right colleges, polish my essays, complete applications, navigate financial aid forms, and confront the challenges of impostor syndrome.

I truly believe I wouldn’t have gained admission to my dream school, Boston University, without that guidance,” Bianca shared.

It’s no secret that college expands students’ horizons in countless ways, but for first-generation students, it’s also an opportunity to give back to their community and to build upon generations of hard work by parents, grandparents, and those who came before them.

“As a first-generation student, attending college means climbing a rung higher on the ladder than my parents could. Their perseverance, especially in the face of physical disabilities, has deeply inspired me. It’s what drives my dream of becoming a physical therapist. I want to help others heal and regain strength, just as I’ve seen my parents fight to do every day,” she reflected.

Stories like Bianca’s remind us that, with the right support, first-generation students can turn dreams into possibilities, even during one of the most stressful times of their lives.
