Join our Board of Directors and Make a Difference for First-Gen Students

ScholarMatch is seeking candidates interested in joining our Board of Directors to volunteer their expertise and help advance our mission in multiple ways. The ScholarMatch Board of Directors is an energetic group of volunteer professionals dedicated to supporting underserved first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds as they pursue a bachelor’s degree within five years.

Roles & Expectations

Responsibilities of the Board of Directors:

As the highest leadership body of the organization, and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:

  • Determining the mission of the organization and understanding its collective purpose
  • Selecting, supporting, and evaluating the performance of the chief executive
  • Supporting our strategic and organizational planning
  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Fundraising and resource development
  • Approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and services
  • Enhancing the organization’s public image
  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization
  • Ensuring legal and ethical integrity

Responsibilities of each individual board member:

  • Make a three-year term commitment, with a max of two terms for a maximum possible total of six-year commitment to board service
  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs, as well as understand its collective purpose
  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization
  • Give or Get policy: Each board member of ScholarMatch commits to raising contributions through personal donations and/or fundraising activities of at least $2,500 per fiscal year (FY), which currently runs from October 1 to September 30. 
  • Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission
  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and influence public policy
  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in virtual board meetings that are scheduled four times per year on Mondays or Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (PST), and an in-person annual board/staff retreat
  • Participate fully in one or more committees: Governance, Audit, Nominations,  Finance, and Fund Development 
  • Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve
  • Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the board and the organization.

Other Responsibilities of Nonprofit Board Members:

  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance
  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization

Nomination Process & Skills

We are seeking passionate and skilled professionals with experience in accounting/fiscal services, as well as a shared value in the importance of making higher education accessible to underserved first-generation students from low-income backgrounds. The ideal candidate will be excited to volunteer, socialize, and network for a great cause! 

As a board member, you will be invited to ScholarMatch events, volunteer opportunities with high school and college students, and use your social and professional network to raise critical funds for this growing organization.

  • Audit Committee Experience
