Being the first in your family to attend college is a remarkable achievement, but it also comes with many other “firsts.” Some of these can be exciting, while others can feel overwhelming and challenging.
These hurdles start even before students set foot on campus. With so much uncertainty affecting the higher education landscape these days, one thing remains constant: the financial burden that comes with most degrees.
College unaffordability is nothing new. However, the many challenges first-generation students face while pursuing higher education continue to evolve. From navigating unfamiliar college systems to juggling multiple part-time jobs, first-generation students carry a lot. These struggles can challenge their sense of belonging and affect their academic success in the long run.
All these changes unfold while students are still finding their footing in adulthood, a complex transitional phase in itself. That’s why holistic programs, such as ScholarMatch, can make all the difference for students, as they have access to personalized guidance from mentors, multiple resources, and a dedicated support system to help them navigate college and beyond.
When asked about the most helpful component of our program, many students point to their advisors’ support during these transitional times. Having a caring mentor in their corner helps students feel seen and heard as they go through such a pivotal moment in their lives.
Personalized mentoring, financial support, and ongoing guidance through graduation are making a lasting impact on our students’ academic trajectories. Thanks to this wraparound support, which puts students front and center, we have seen a graduation rate of 80% among our scholars, almost four times higher than the national average, according to recent research from FirstGen Forward.
With that in mind, our Scholar Voices series was designed to uplift student stories from our community and shine a light on their journeys and unique experiences that come with being “first.” These experiences can vary significantly from those of continuing-generation students who inherit some college knowledge.
These virtual sessions bring scholars and coaches together to discuss college life, career growth, and the hurdles these scholars encounter not only in college but also in the workforce.
